Service Day is Open to ALL Students and Faculty, so Spread the Word!

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY:
We all love ACS and the fact that its headquarters are in Atlanta! All of you budding oncologists will surely enjoy volunteering at the annual Boo Bash at the ACS Hope Lodge. The ACS Hope Lodge is truly extraordinary, as it offers cancer patients and their families a free, temporary place to stay when their cancer treatment takes them to an unfamiliar city. Join the patients and their families for a morning of Halloween fun!

CLYDE SHEPERD NATURE PRESERVE:
Are you a big bird-watcher? Did you love going to nature parks as a kid (or heck, as an adult)? Then come volunteer at the Clyde Sheperd Nature Preserve – right in our neighborhood! The Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve is a 28-acre nature preserve which supports a diversity of wildlife and plants for the enjoyment and education of the community. The preserve is hosting its annual harvest festival on the evening of the 31st and needs help that morning preparing the property for the evening’s festivities. Lend a green thumb!

GOOD SAMARITAN HEALTH CENTER:
Are you interested in serving the medically underserved? Then the Good Sam is a great place to start! The Good Samaritan Health Center was created by an Emory faculty member and is run almost entirely by Emory medical and PA students on several days during the week. Because this center is a non-profit healthcare facility, there are many ways that we can truly help and support Good Sam. On Service Day, our volunteers can look forward to sprucing up the place (clearing debris and killing kudzu!) and making it more presentable and functional for the thousands of patients that are served.

Come join us for a health fair held at City of Refuge (an organization that works to help people who live on the poverty margin, located a couple of miles west of downtown) on Oct. 31st! NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER:
The Georgia water systems need your help! Due to the floods that hit the Atlanta area last month, many of our rivers are filled with excess trash and debris. Volunteers are needed all over the Atlanta area to help restore the beauty and cleanliness of Atlanta’s important river systems.

PROJECT OPEN HAND:
Channel your inner Rachael Ray or favorite Food Network star for a good cause! Volunteer with Project Open Hand and work in the kitchen to prepare healthy meals for patients who are homebound with chronic illnesses, or cruise around Atlanta delivering meals to those in need!
***When signing up for Project Open Hand, please indicate whether you would like to (1) work in the kitchen or (2) deliver meals. If you would rather deliver meals, please indicate whether or not you can provide transportation for one of the 10 routes.

REECE CENTER for HANDICAPPED HORSEMANSHIP:

Kids and horses! What could be better! Use your handy-person skills to clean up the grounds at the Reece Center. This group provides equine therapy for Metro Atlanta’s physically and mentally challenged children and runs entirely with volunteer support!

EDGE (Earning Dignity, Gaining Employment) provides comprehensive day-time support services to homeless men and women in the community who are seeking employment. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve breakfast, pass out toiletries and donations, check items in and out of the storage closet, and check clients in and out of the front desk.
